The videos are finished and in the classes’ hands, and the final touches are being put on plans for the big event. Six schools are on board for Wednesday’s teleconference and we’re all looking forward to learning more about each other’s home community.

Objet: Projet pilote – vidéo communautaire
Cher(e) enseignant(e),
Nous aimerions vous remercier de votre intérêt pour le projet pilote visant à monter une vidéo sur votre communauté. À ce jour, vous avez pris connaissance de notre dépliant et vous avez été en contact avec l’un des membres de l’équipe du groupe Our/Notre NB. Par cette lettre, nous aimerions vous faire une mise à jour sur le projet.
Nous avons présentement 8 à 10 classes, représentant plusieurs communautés différentes de la province (nord et sud, rurale et urbaine, française et anglaise), qui aimeraient participer au projet.
Nous voulons par ce projet faciliter la création et l’échange de court-métrage entre des groupes d’élèves qui exploreront le passé, le présent et le futur des communautés du Nouveau-Brunswick. En acceptant de participer à ce projet, vous participerez avec votre classe de 7e année en créant un court vidéo qui démontrera certains aspects du passé, du présent et du futur de votre communauté. Dans le dépliant, vous retrouverez quelques conseils afin de commencer à préparer la vidéo. Par contre, il n’y a aucune contrainte ou de lignes directrices sur ce que la vidéo devrait être car nous voulons éveiller la créativité de vos élèves.
Par contre, nous reconnaissons qu’il doit y avoir certains paramètres à suivre en termes d’échéancier, la durée de la vidéo (3 à 5 minutes), l’équipement requis, etc. Nous travaillons présentement à la définition de ces paramètres et nous vous en informerons vers la mi-décembre afin que le projet puisse débuter en janvier 2009. Nous prévoyons que le projet prendra fin en mai 2009 avec une vidéoconférence ou autre, afin que les vidéos puissent être vues par les élèves des autres classes participantes. Bref, le mandat principal du projet est d’échanger et de partager ces vidéos et les idées y étant présentées.
Nous sommes également dans le processus de conclure des ententes de partenariats avec la communauté artistique et l’industrie du film afin de dénicher des mentors pour votre classe en termes de support technique au filmage et au montage de la vidéo. Même si certaines classes n’ont pas besoin de cette expertise, nous visons quand même de mettre à la disposition de chacune des classes un mentor en cas d’imprévus techniques, et ce afin de ne pas limiter la créativité des élèves.
Au début novembre, nous avons présenté le concept de ce projet pilote à un groupe de leader communautaire avant le début du Festival des idées à St-Andrews. Ceux qui ont assisté à cette présentation furent très enthousiasmes à propos du projet et ont souligné l’importance de ces projets qui permettent à nos jeunes et à nos communautés de partager leur histoire entre eux. En fait, l’un des thèmes dominant du Festival des idées a été le besoin des gens du Nouveau-Brunswick et des provinces de l’Atlantique de mieux promouvoir et partager nos histoires à succès entre nos communautés.
Vous trouverez ci-joint une copie de cette présentation powerpoint qui a été présenté à St-Andrews. Nous avons décidé de partager ce document avec vous afin de mieux vous situer dans le contexte d’où le projet a commencé et qu’est-ce que nous aimerions accomplir.

RE: Community Video Pilot Project
Thank you for your interest in the Our/Notre NB Community Video Pilot Project. At this point you will have seen our project brochure and have been in touch with one of the Our/Notre NB team members about the project. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with a quick update on the project.
Indications are that we will have 8-10 classes participating in the pilot project, representing a wide range of communities around the province: North and South, urban and rural, French and English.
We have defined the project like this: Facilitating the creation and exchange of short films between groups of students that explore the past, present, and future of NB communities. By agreeing to participate in the project, you will be expected to work with your Grade 7 class to create a short video that explores some aspect or aspects of the past, present and/or future of your community. Some questions for your students to consider in preparing the video are listed in our brochure. Beyond that, there are no guidelines as to what the video should be about as we would like to leave the subject matter and content mostly to the creativity of your students.
We do recognize however that there must be some parameters in place in terms of deadlines, length of video (e.g. 3-5 minutes), equipment to be used, etc. We are working on defining those parameters now and expect to be in a position to formalize them by mid-December so that your classes can hit the ground running on this project in early 2009. We anticipate that project wrap-up will take place in May in the form of a video-conference or some other manner by which the videos can be exchanged with the other participating classes. After all, it is the exchange and sharing of the videos and the ideas presented in them that is the main focus of the project.
We are also in the process of identifying and formalizing partnerships in the film and arts communities in the province in order to find a mentor with video/editing/technical skills for each class. While it may be that some classes do not end up requiring the services of a mentor, we are aiming to make one available for each class so that the technical burden of shooting and editing the video does not get in the way of the creativity of the students.
As an aside, in early November we presented the concept for this project before a group of community leaders prior to the opening session of the Ideas Festival in Saint Andrews. Those who saw the presentation were very enthusiastic about the project and noted the importance of projects like this that enable our youth and our communities to share their stories with each other around the province. Indeed, one of the dominant themes that emerged at the Ideas Festival was the need for New Brunswickers and the rest of Atlantic Canada to do a better job of telling our stories, both to each other and to those outside the region. Some even went so far as to say that the future of the province and the region, at least in part, depends on it.
Attached to this letter is a copy of the PowerPoint slides that we presented in Saint Andrews. We share this with you as it may give you more of an idea of where the idea came from for the project, and what we are trying to accomplish with it.
